“The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”
Reflection
Some people look at the condition of the world and wonder why God has not already brought judgment. Sin is celebrated, truth is rejected, and wickedness seems to increase with each passing generation. Yet Peter reminds us that God’s delay is not weakness, nor has He forgotten His promises. It is mercy.
God is longsuffering because He desires people to repent. Every additional day is another opportunity for someone to hear the Gospel, recognize their sinful condition, and turn to Jesus Christ for salvation.
But God’s patience should never be mistaken for God’s approval. The same Bible that teaches us about His mercy also warns us that judgment is coming. There will be a day when the opportunity to repent is gone. Death will come, Christ will return, and every person will eventually face eternity.
That truth should bring conviction to both the lost and the saved. If you have never trusted Jesus Christ, do not mistake another day of life as evidence that everything is right between you and God. His patience is giving you another opportunity to repent and believe the Gospel.
For believers, God’s patience should increase our burden for lost souls. Someone you know may still be alive today because God is giving them another opportunity to hear about Jesus. Pray for them. Speak to them. Love them enough to tell them the truth.
God’s judgment is certain, but today His mercy is still being offered.
Do not waste the opportunity His patience has provided.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your patience and mercy toward sinful mankind. Thank You that You gave Your Son, Jesus Christ, so that we would not have to perish but could receive everlasting life through Him. Help me never to mistake Your patience for approval of sin. Search my heart and bring conviction wherever repentance is needed. Give me a deeper burden for those who are lost and the courage to faithfully share the Gospel with them. May I use every opportunity You give me to point someone toward Jesus Christ while Your invitation of mercy is still being offered. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
