“Quench not the Spirit.”
Reflection
This is one of the shortest verses in the Bible, but its message carries tremendous weight. The Holy Spirit works in the life of the believer to guide, teach, correct, comfort, and convict. Yet Scripture warns us that it is possible to resist His work in our lives.
To “quench” means to suppress or put out, like extinguishing a fire. When the Holy Spirit convicts us about something and we continually ignore Him, we begin resisting the very One who is trying to draw us into closer fellowship with God.
Perhaps He is convicting you about a habit that needs to stop. Maybe He is telling you to forgive someone, apologize for something you have done, spend more time in God’s Word, pray more faithfully, or speak to someone about Jesus Christ. The longer we resist His leading, the easier it can become to ignore His voice.
Personal conviction is not something Christians should fear. We should be thankful for it. When God shows us something that needs to change, He is demonstrating His love by refusing to leave us where we are.
A dangerous spiritual condition develops when sin no longer bothers us. If something that once troubled our conscience can now be practiced without concern, we should stop and examine our hearts before God.
Do not silence the conviction of the Holy Spirit. When He speaks through God’s Word, respond. When He reveals sin, repent. When He directs you toward obedience, follow.
A tender heart does not argue with God. It listens and obeys.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in my life. Forgive me for the times I have ignored Your conviction or resisted what You were telling me to do. Keep my heart tender and sensitive to Your Word. Reveal any sin, attitude, habit, or relationship that is interfering with my fellowship with You. Give me the humility to repent and the courage to obey immediately when You speak to my heart. Help me to walk each day under the guidance of Your Spirit and live a life that honors Jesus Christ. In His name, Amen.
