October 10 – The Words We Will Answer For

Scripture (KJV) – Matthew 12:36–37

“But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.”

Reflection

We often think about being accountable to God for what we do, but Jesus reminds us that our words matter too.

Words can encourage someone who is struggling, comfort someone who is hurting, and point a lost person toward Jesus Christ. But words can also destroy reputations, spread gossip, stir up anger, deceive others, and leave wounds that may last for years.

Jesus says that people will give an account for “every idle word.” That should cause each of us to examine the way we speak.

Before I repeat something about another person, I should ask whether it is true and whether it needs to be said. Before I speak when I am angry, I should remember that words spoken in a moment can cause damage that an apology may not immediately repair.

This applies to more than the words that come from our mouths. In our time, words are constantly being written in text messages, emails, social media posts, and comments. We may type something in seconds, but once those words leave us, we cannot always control where they go or what damage they cause.

A changed life should eventually produce changed speech.

This does not mean Christians will never say something they regret. We will fail, and when we do, we should be willing to confess it, ask forgiveness, and make things right. But we should never become comfortable using words in ways that dishonor Christ.

Today, before speaking about someone else, ask yourself a simple question:

Would I be comfortable saying these same words if Jesus were standing beside me?

The truth is, He already hears them.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, help me to remember that the words I speak matter to You. Guard my tongue from gossip, anger, dishonesty, and words that unnecessarily hurt others. Give me wisdom to know when to speak and when to remain silent. When I fail, give me humility to admit it and make things right. May my words encourage others, speak truth, and bring honor to Jesus Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
