“But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.”
Reflection
Words can seem small, but Jesus teaches us that they carry tremendous weight. Once something leaves our mouth, we cannot take it back. Words can encourage someone who is hurting, strengthen someone who is weak, and point a lost person toward Christ. But words can also wound, destroy reputations, spread gossip, and leave scars that remain for years.
Jesus gives us a sobering reminder that our words matter to God. He hears not only what we say in church or around other believers, but also what we say when we are angry, frustrated, joking with friends, or speaking about someone who is not present.
This should bring personal conviction to every one of us. Before speaking, we should ask ourselves whether our words honor Christ. Are they truthful? Are they necessary? Are they spoken in love? Would we be comfortable saying them if Jesus were visibly standing beside us?
Our speech often reveals what is happening inside our hearts. Bitterness eventually speaks. Pride eventually speaks. Anger eventually speaks. But when our hearts are filled with the love and grace of Christ, that will also become evident in the way we speak.
We will not always get it right. When we speak wrongly, we should be willing to admit it, ask forgiveness, and make things right. God can change not only what comes out of our mouths but also the heart from which those words originate.
Before you speak today, remember that your words have power. Use them to encourage rather than tear down, to speak truth rather than gossip, and above all, to tell others about Jesus Christ.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, forgive me for the careless words I have spoken and for the times my speech has hurt others or failed to honor You. Guard my mouth and help me think before I speak. Remove bitterness, anger, pride, and gossip from my heart so they will not control my words. Give me speech filled with truth, grace, compassion, and love. Help me use my voice to encourage others, defend what is right, and faithfully share the Gospel of Jesus Christ. May the words of my mouth bring glory and honor to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
