Scripture (KJV) – Proverbs 29:1
“He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.”
Reflection
God is patient and merciful. He warns us, corrects us, and gives us opportunities to turn away from sin. But this verse reminds us that we should never mistake God’s patience for permission to continue doing wrong.
Solomon describes someone who has been “often reproved.” This is not a person who was warned only once. God has dealt with him repeatedly, but instead of listening, he continues to harden himself against correction.
That is dangerous.
Every time we resist conviction, it becomes a little easier to resist it again. We can become so comfortable making excuses for sin that eventually we stop recognizing how far we have moved away from God.
There may be something in your life that God has already spoken to you about. Perhaps you know it is wrong, but you keep telling yourself that you will deal with it later. Perhaps God has used Scripture, a sermon, a Bible lesson, or someone who loves you to bring it to your attention.
Do not keep pushing conviction away.
There is also a warning here for the person who continually rejects Jesus Christ. God is longsuffering and offers salvation through His Son, but Scripture never promises that a person can reject Christ throughout life and still have another opportunity whenever he chooses.
There comes a point when life ends and eternity begins.
If God is dealing with you, respond while He is dealing with you. If there is sin that needs to be confessed, confess it. If there is something that needs to be made right, make it right. If you have never trusted Jesus Christ for salvation, do not keep putting Him off.
God’s warnings are an expression of His mercy. The wise person listens before the warning becomes judgment.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me enough to correct me when I am wrong. Help me never to harden myself against Your Word or ignore the conviction You bring into my life. Show me anything I have been excusing or refusing to surrender. Give me humility to repent quickly and obey You. Give me compassion for those who continue rejecting Christ, and help me faithfully warn them while there is still time. Thank You for Your patience, mercy, and salvation through Jesus Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
