October 14 –  When God Examines the Heart

Scripture (KJV) — Psalm 139:23–24

“Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”

Reflection

It is easy to look at the sins of others while overlooking the things that need to change in our own lives. We may appear faithful on the outside, attend church, read our Bibles, and say all the right things, but God sees much deeper than what the world sees. He knows our thoughts, our motives, our attitudes, and even the sins we try to hide from ourselves.

David’s prayer in these verses is one that I believe every Christian should be willing to pray. He was not asking God to examine someone else’s heart or reveal someone else’s failures. He was asking God to search his own heart and show him anything that was displeasing to the Lord.

That kind of prayer requires humility because sometimes the truth about ourselves is difficult to face. Yet when the Holy Spirit brings conviction into our lives, it is an opportunity to repent, seek God’s forgiveness, and grow closer to Him. We should never mistake God’s patience for His approval of sin, because the same God who offers mercy is also holy and righteous in His judgment.

The question today is not whether we can convince others that we are living right, but whether we are willing to let God show us where we need to change.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I come before You today asking You to search my heart and reveal anything in my life that is not pleasing to You. Lord, forgive me for the times I have been quick to recognize the faults of others while ignoring my own shortcomings. Help me to listen when Your Holy Spirit brings conviction and give me the humility to repent rather than make excuses for my sins. Create within me a greater desire to walk in obedience to Your Word, love others as You have commanded, and live each day in a way that brings honor and glory to Your name. Thank You for Your patience, Your mercy, and the forgiveness made possible through Jesus Christ. In His precious name I pray. Amen.
