October 8 – The Judgment We Cannot Escape

Scripture (KJV) – Hebrews 9:27–28

“And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.”

Reflection

There are appointments in life that we can cancel, postpone, or simply choose not to keep. But Scripture tells us there is one appointment none of us will escape.

“It is appointed unto men once to die.”

Unless we are among those alive when Christ returns for His Church, physical death will eventually come. But death is not the end. God’s Word immediately adds, “but after this the judgment.”

That should cause every person to think seriously about eternity.

The wonderful truth is that God has provided the answer to our sin before that day arrives. Jesus Christ was “once offered to bear the sins of many.” He took our sins upon Himself and paid the price we could never pay.

We do not get ready to meet God by becoming religious enough, doing enough good works, or comparing ourselves with someone worse than we are. We must come to Jesus Christ.

For those who belong to Him, this passage also contains a wonderful promise. Christ is coming again. The same Savior who came the first time to bear our sins will appear again.

That means I should live every day remembering two realities: this life will end, and Jesus Christ is coming again.

If there is something between you and God, deal with it today. If you have never trusted Jesus Christ as your Savior, do not gamble with eternity.

Death is certain. Judgment is coming. But salvation is available today through Jesus Christ.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me that this life is temporary and eternity is real. Help me to examine my life and never become careless about my relationship with You. Thank You for sending Jesus Christ to bear my sins upon the Cross. Give me a greater burden for those who are lost, and help me faithfully tell them about the salvation found in Christ. Help me to live each day ready to meet You and looking for the return of my Savior. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
