THE PURPOSE OF THE TRIBULATION PERIOD

A Detailed, Scripture-Driven Study from the King James Bible
By Junior Tate Ministries

INTRODUCTION: WHY WOULD GOD ALLOW A TRIBULATION?

When people hear the phrase “the Tribulation”, they often picture chaos, fear, war, famine, and judgment. And the Bible does describe a time unlike any the world has ever seen.

But the Tribulation period is not random suffering, nor is it God “losing control” of the world.

Scripture presents it as a purposeful, measured, and prophetic period in which God accomplishes specific objectives—objectives that reveal His holiness, His justice, His faithfulness to Israel and the world, and His mercy toward sinners.

The Tribulation is a time of testing, judgment, purging, awakening, and final preparation before the visible return of Jesus Christ to reign.

The Bible calls it “great tribulation,” “the time of Jacob’s trouble,” and “the day of the LORD.” It is connected directly to prophecy—especially in Daniel and Revelation—and it is presented as the final stretch of human rebellion before Christ returns in power and glory.

This article will lay out, from Scripture, the main purposes of the Tribulation period.

We will not build the doctrine from speculation, headlines, or opinions.

We will let the Bible interpret the Bible and show what God says He is doing during this time.

THE TRIBULATION MAGNIFIES GOD’S HOLINESS AND RIGHTEOUS JUDGMENT

One primary purpose of the Tribulation is to reveal that God is not indifferent to sin. The world often treats wickedness like it has no consequences. The Tribulation exposes the truth: God judges sin righteously with no favoritism.

God’s judgments are true and just

Revelation 16:5-7 (KJV)
“And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus.
For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy.
And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments.”

The Tribulation is not God “overreacting.” Heaven itself declares His judgments are true and righteous.

The world has shed innocent blood, despised truth, and rejected Christ. In the Tribulation, God answers with justice that matches the crime.

God’s wrath is not like human anger

Romans 2:5-6 (KJV)
“But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; Who will render to every man according to his deeds:”

The Tribulation reveals the “day of wrath” as the revelation of righteous judgment, not uncontrolled rage. It is measured. It is deserved. It is holy.

Purpose: The Tribulation vindicates God’s holiness before a rebellious world and demonstrates that the Judge of all the earth will do right.

THE TRIBULATION IS GOD’S DIRECT RESPONSE TO A WORLD THAT REJECTED THE TRUTH

A major theme in Revelation is that people do not merely “make mistakes”—they refuse repentance, even under judgment.

The Tribulation exposes the depth of human rebellion and the hardness of hearts.

Even under judgment, many will not repent!

Revelation 9:20-21 (KJV)
“And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk: Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.”

Here God shows the true spiritual condition of mankind: not only sin, but stubborn refusal to turn.

God gives the world over to deception because they rejected truth

2 Thessalonians 2:10-12 (KJV)
“And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.”

This passage shows a terrifying principle: when people hate truth long enough, God may judge them by allowing them to embrace deception fully.

Purpose: The Tribulation displays the outcome of rejecting truth—deception, delusion, and judgment—so that the world sees that sin has a real end.

THE TRIBULATION COMPLETES PROPHETIC PURPOSES GOD DECREED—ESPECIALLY IN DANIEL

The Tribulation period is not an isolated idea. It is tied to Daniel’s prophecy of the “seventy weeks,” where God lays out a prophetic program with specific objectives.

God’s stated purposes in Daniel

Daniel 9:24 (KJV)
“Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.”

This verse is one of the clearest “purpose statements” in end-times prophecy. It reveals that God’s program includes:

  • Finishing transgression
  • Making an end of sins
  • Making reconciliation for iniquity
  • Bringing in everlasting righteousness
  • Sealing up vision and prophecy
  • Anointing the most Holy

The Tribulation period fits into this prophetic completion. God is moving history toward a conclusion He announced long before.

Purpose: The Tribulation helps bring prophecy to completion and prepares the world for the arrival of everlasting righteousness under Christ.

THE TRIBULATION IS “THE TIME OF JACOB’S TROUBLE” — GOD’S DISCIPLINE AND DELIVERANCE FOR ISRAEL

Scripture connects the end-time trouble directly with Israel (Jacob). This does not mean Gentiles are uninvolved—Revelation shows worldwide judgments—but it does show that Israel has a central role in God’s end-time plan.

The Bible names it plainly

Jeremiah 30:7 (KJV)
“Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob’s trouble; but he shall be saved out of it.”

Two truths appear together:

  1. None is like it (unmatched trouble)
  2. He shall be saved out of it (deliverance is coming)

God uses this time to bring Israel to the end of self-reliance and to prepare them to recognize their true Messiah.

A refining, purging purpose

Zechariah 13:8-9 (KJV)
“And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the LORD, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein.
And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God.”

This is not “God forgetting Israel.” It is God purging, refining, and bringing a remnant to call upon His name.

Purpose: The Tribulation serves as a refining fire for Israel, leading to deliverance and covenant recognition: “The LORD is my God.”

But not just Israel alone, God Himself not only awakens Israel but the whole World in one last attempt to save humanity from their sins and hell.

THE TRIBULATION FORCES THE WORLD TO CONFRONT WHO JESUS CHRIST IS

One of the deepest purposes of the Tribulation is that it drives humanity to the unavoidable question: Who is Jesus? In Revelation, the Lamb is central. History is shown as moving under His authority.

The Lamb opens the seals

Revelation 6:1 (KJV)
“And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see.”

Judgment proceeds because the Lamb opens the seals. This means the Tribulation is not merely “natural disasters.” It is the outworking of divine authority through Christ.

People will recognize the wrath of the Lamb

Revelation 6:15-17 (KJV)
“And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;
And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:
For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?”

Notice: they identify it as the wrath of the Lamb. The Tribulation compels acknowledgment that Jesus is not merely a teacher—He is the divine Judge and rightful King.

Purpose: The Tribulation reveals Christ’s authority, forcing the world to confront the truth: Jesus Christ reigns, and rejection has consequences.

THE TRIBULATION IS ALSO A MERCY: GOD STILL SAVES MULTITUDES DURING IT

Even in judgment, God shows mercy. Revelation reveals that many will be saved during the Tribulation—so many that they are described as a great multitude no man can number.

A multitude saved out of great tribulation

Revelation 7:9-14 (KJV)
“After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;
And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb.
And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God,
Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.
And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they?
And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.”

God does not stop saving because judgment has begun. He saves people from all nations, proving His mercy is still extended.

Purpose: The Tribulation is a final era of urgent mercy—God gathers a redeemed multitude even as He judges the world.

THE TRIBULATION EXPOSES AND DESTROYS THE FINAL WORLD SYSTEM AGAINST GOD

Revelation describes a corrupt end-time system—political, economic, spiritual—often pictured as “Babylon.” The Tribulation includes God’s dismantling of that proud world order.

The fall of Babylon

Revelation 18:2-3 (KJV)
“And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.
For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.”

This is a spiritual and moral indictment—“habitation of devils”—and also a judgment on corrupt global commerce and power.

Purpose: The Tribulation tears down the last rebellion-based world order so that Christ’s kingdom can be established openly.

THE TRIBULATION PREPARES THE WORLD FOR THE VISIBLE RETURN OF CHRIST AND HIS KINGDOM

The Tribulation does not end with man fixing the world. It ends with the King returning.

Christ returns in power and glory

Matthew 24:29-31 (KJV)
“Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:
And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.”

Jesus Himself places a direct connection: after the tribulation, He returns.

He reigns as King of Kings

Revelation 19:11, 15-16 (KJV)
“And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.”

“And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”

The return of Christ is not symbolic in this passage—it is a real appearing with authority and judgment, leading into His reign.

Purpose: The Tribulation sets the stage for the public, undeniable return of Jesus Christ and the beginning of His righteous rule.

THE TRIBULATION PROVES THAT HUMANITY CANNOT SAVE ITSELF—ONLY GOD’S KINGDOM CAN BRING PEACE

Throughout history, man has tried politics, technology, alliances, armies, and money. The Tribulation demonstrates the final failure of human power to create a righteous world.

The kingdoms of this world will become Christ’s kingdom

Revelation 11:15 (KJV)
“And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.”

This is the climax: the world’s kingdoms do not gradually evolve into God’s kingdom. They are replaced by Christ’s rule.

Purpose: The Tribulation reveals the bankruptcy of human governance apart from God and ushers in the reign of Christ.

THE TRIBULATION WILL BE A TIME OF WORLDWIDE REVIVAL — A FINAL GLOBAL CALL TO SALVATION

While the Tribulation is a time of severe judgment, Scripture also reveals something astonishing: it will be one of the greatest evangelistic movements in human history.

The same period that reveals God’s wrath also reveals His relentless mercy. Even as judgments fall, heaven continues to preach.

God does not judge without warning. He does not pour out wrath without extending opportunity. The Tribulation period becomes the final worldwide call to repentance before Christ returns in glory.

This is not speculation. The Bible plainly shows God sending witnesses, angels, sealed servants, and prophetic voices across the earth during this time.

The Gospel Will Be Preached to the Entire World

Matthew 24:14 (KJV)
“And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.”

Jesus Himself declared that before the end comes, the gospel will be preached in all the world. During the Tribulation, this global proclamation reaches its climax. Every nation will hear. No one will be able to say they were never warned.

This shows something critical:
The Tribulation is not merely a time of destruction — it is a time of testimony.

God Seals and Sends 144,000 Jewish Witnesses to preach the Gospel!

Revelation 7:2-4 (KJV)
“And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea,
Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.
And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel.”

These 144,000 are specifically called “servants of our God.” They are sealed for divine protection and clearly set apart for God’s purpose during this period.

This demonstrates:

  • God preserves a remnant.
  • God commissions witnesses.
  • God ensures the gospel continues even in chaos.

These servants are not silent observers. They are active instruments in God’s final harvest.

The Two Witnesses Proclaim Truth With Power

Revelation 11:3 (KJV)
“And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.”

For 1,260 days (42 months), these two witnesses will publicly prophesy in Jerusalem. They will call people to repentance, confront evil leadership, and boldly declare God’s truth.

The world will try to silence them. Eventually they will be killed — but even their resurrection becomes a testimony.

Revelation 11:11-12 (KJV)
“And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them.
And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither. And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them.”

Even in judgment, God gives unmistakable signs so that people may believe.

An Angel Will Preach the Everlasting Gospel Worldwide

One of the most powerful revival passages in Revelation shows that God will even send an angel to proclaim the gospel globally.

Revelation 14:6-7 (KJV)
“And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,
Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.”

Notice the scope:

  • Every nation
  • Every kindred
  • Every tongue
  • Every people

This is not limited evangelism. It is universal proclamation about Jesus Christ.

Even at the very hour of judgment, the message is still:
“Fear God… give glory to Him… worship Him.”

This shows clearly that the Tribulation includes one final opportunity for repentance before Christ returns.

A Great Multitude Will Be Saved Out of the Tribulation

Earlier we saw Revelation 7 describing a countless multitude saved during this period. Let us look again at the declaration that they came specifically out of the Tribulation.

Revelation 7:13-14 (KJV)
“And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they?
And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.”

These are not symbolic abstractions. They are real redeemed souls from:

  • All nations
  • All tribes
  • All languages

This reveals that even in the darkest period of human history, the light of the gospel shines brightly.

Judgment does not stop salvation. In fact, judgment awakens many who previously ignored God.

THE TRIBULATION: JUDGMENT AND MERCY SIDE BY SIDE

One of the most sobering truths of Revelation is that many still refuse to repent, even under judgment:

Revelation 16:9 (KJV)
“And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.”

Yet alongside this stubborn rebellion stands undeniable revival. Multitudes are saved. Witnesses preach. Angels proclaim. Israel is refined. The gospel reaches the globe.

This shows that the Tribulation period is not merely punitive — it is redemptive in purpose.

It is God’s final sweeping call to humanity:

  • A warning to the rebellious
  • A refining to Israel
  • A confrontation of deception
  • A worldwide proclamation of the everlasting gospel
  • A final opportunity to bow before the King returns visibly

GOD’S HEART: ONE LAST CALL BEFORE THE KING RETURNS

The Tribulation reveals two truths simultaneously:

  1. God is holy and must judge sin.
  2. God is merciful and still calls sinners to repentance.

The Bible never presents God as eager to destroy. Instead, it shows His long-suffering nature.

2 Peter 3:9 (KJV)
“The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”

Even the Tribulation itself demonstrates this long-suffering. Before the final visible return of Christ in Revelation 19, the world is given:

  • Prophetic warnings
  • Supernatural signs
  • Global evangelism
  • Public witnesses
  • Angelic proclamation
  • Sealed servants
  • Opportunities to repent

No generation will ever receive more visible evidence of God’s reality than the Tribulation generation.

HOW THIS TIES INTO THE PURPOSE OF THE TRIBULATION

When we combine everything Scripture reveals, the Tribulation serves multiple divine purposes:

  • It magnifies God’s holiness.
  • It judges unrepentant rebellion.
  • It fulfills prophecy.
  • It refines Israel and the world.
  • It destroys the final world system.
  • It prepares for Christ’s return.
  • And it produces a final worldwide revival and harvest.

The Tribulation is therefore not merely the darkest hour — it is also the final great invitation before the door closes.

When Christ returns in Revelation 19 as KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS, the world will not be able to say it was never warned, never called, or never given opportunity.

Every nation will have heard.
Every soul will have faced the truth.
Every heart will have chosen.

CONCLUSION: WHAT THE TRIBULATION TELLS US RIGHT NOW

When you gather these purposes, the Tribulation period becomes clear in Scripture:

  • It magnifies God’s holiness and justice.
  • It is judgment upon a world that rejected truth.
  • It advances and completes God’s prophetic program.
  • It refines Israel and leads to future deliverance.
  • It forces the world to confront Jesus Christ as Lamb and King.
  • It still shows mercy, saving a multitude out of great tribulation.
  • It destroys the final world system of rebellion.
  • It prepares for the visible return of Christ and His kingdom.
  • It proves that only God’s reign can bring lasting righteousness.

The Tribulation is not a subject meant to satisfy curiosity. It is meant to warn, to call to repentance, and to magnify Christ.

The Bible’s consistent message is that judgment is coming—but so is salvation for all who will come to the Lamb.

God’s heart: not pleasure in judgment, but a call to repentance

Ezekiel 33:11 (KJV)
“Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?”

Even when God reveals coming judgment, He calls people to turn and live.

The ultimate invitation remains open

Revelation 22:17 (KJV)
“And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.”

That invitation is mercy. And it is the reason you should not treat the Tribulation as distant information, but as a present warning to come to Christ while the door is open.

FINAL REFLECTION

The doctrine of the Tribulation is not given to satisfy curiosity. It is given to awaken urgency.

If God will extend mercy even in the hour of global judgment, how much more does He extend mercy today?

The invitation remains open now:

Revelation 22:17 (KJV)
“And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.”

The Tribulation proves that God gives warning before wrath.
It proves He calls before He closes the door.
It proves He saves even in judgment.

And it proves that Jesus Christ will reign.

If the Holy Spirit is convicting and pulling at your heart strings today, give in to Him and follow the prayer below for your salvation in Jesus Christ!

You may not ever get another chance to except Christ as your personal Savior and Lord! Your next breath is not promised!

Come! He’s Waiting on You!

Prayer to Salvation

Heavenly Father,
I come before You today admitting that I am a sinner in need of Your mercy and grace.

Your Word says in Romans 10:9–10 that if I confess with my mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in my heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, I shall be saved.

Today, I confess Jesus Christ as my Lord and my Savior. I believe with all my heart that He died for my sins, was buried, and rose again the third day.

Lord Jesus, I ask You to forgive me of all my sins. Wash me clean in Your precious blood. I turn from my old life and surrender fully to You.

Come into my heart, make me a new creature, and fill me with the Holy Spirit. From this day forward, I choose to follow You, live by Your Word, and walk in the new life You have given me.

Thank You, Lord, for saving me, for forgiving me, and for writing my name in the Lamb’s Book of Life. I give You all the glory, honor, and praise.

In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
