There is no question more serious, more urgent, and more personal than this:
“What must I do to be saved?”
This is not a question about religion, church membership, or self-improvement. It is about your soul, your eternal destiny, and where you will spend forever.
The Bible records this very question being asked nearly 2,000 years ago, and God has given a clear, unchanging answer.
(Acts 16:30–31, KJV) “And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.”
In this article, we will let Scripture speak for itself. We will not lean on opinions, traditions, or feelings, but on the Word of God alone. God has spoken clearly about:
- Why you need to be saved
- Who alone can save you
- What you must do to be saved
- How you can know that you are saved
- Why you must not delay
Why Do I Need to Be Saved?
Many people think they are “basically good,” or “good enough for heaven.” But God’s Word tells us the truth about our condition.
We are all sinners by nature and by choice
(Romans 3:10–12, KJV) “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable;
there is none that doeth good, no, not one.”
(Romans 3:23, KJV) “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”
God is perfectly holy. His standard is not “better than most people,” but His own perfect righteousness.
To “come short of the glory of God” means that no matter how hard we try, we cannot reach His standard on our own.
Sin is not just the “big” things (murder, theft, adultery); it includes every lie, every impure thought, every act of pride, every moment of rebellion against God.
Sin has a serious consequence
(Romans 6:23, KJV) “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
A “wage” is what you earn. Because of our sin, what we have earned is death. This includes physical death and, far more serious, spiritual death, eternal separation from God in hell.
God’s Word also reminds us:
(Hebrews 9:27, KJV) “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:”
Every person will die once, and after death comes judgment. This is why the question, “What must I do to be saved?” is not a theoretical question; it is a personal appointment every soul will face.
Who Can Save Me?
In a world of religions, ideas, and philosophies, many claim to offer a path to God. But the Bible is clear: only one Person can save you.
Salvation is in a Person, not a system
(John 14:6, KJV) “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life:
no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
Jesus did not say He is a way or one of many ways. He said, “I am the way.” There is no other road, no back door, no alternate path to the Father.
(Acts 4:12, KJV) “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”
Notice: “none other name.” Not our name, not a church’s name, not a prophet’s name, only the name of Jesus Christ.
What did Jesus do to save us?
The gospel is not just that Jesus was a good teacher or example. The Bible defines the gospel clearly:
(1 Corinthians 15:3–4, KJV) “For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received,
how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:”
- He died – not for His own sins (He had none), but “for our sins.”
- He was buried – He truly died, taking the penalty of our sin.
- He rose again the third day – proving His sacrifice was accepted, and that He has power over sin, death, and hell.
This is how God showed His love for us:
(Romans 5:8, KJV) “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
God did not wait for us to become better or clean ourselves up. While we were still sinners, still guilty, still unworthy; Christ died for us.
Salvation Is by Grace, Not by Works
Most people naturally think: “If I live a good life, I’ll go to heaven.” But God’s Word says the exact opposite.
(Ephesians 2:8–9, KJV) “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves:
it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
(Titus 3:5, KJV) “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;”
If we could save ourselves by good works, then salvation would not be a gift; it would be a wage we earned. But the Bible says salvation is entirely by grace (God’s undeserved favor) and “not of works.”
No one will ever stand in heaven and say, “I am here because I was good enough.” All glory will go to the Lamb who was slain.
What Must I Do to Be Saved?
Now we return to the question of the Philippian jailer:
(Acts 16:30–31, KJV) “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.”
The answer God gives is clear: “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.” But what does that mean according to Scripture?
You must repent
Repentance is more than feeling sorry; it is a change of mind toward God and sin, a turning from sin and self to God.
(Acts 17:30–31, KJV) “And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men everywhere to repent: Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.”
(Luke 13:3, KJV) “I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.”
Repentance means you agree with God about your sin, that it is evil, that it separates you from Him, and you turn from trusting yourself to trusting Christ alone.
You must believe the gospel with your heart
True saving faith is not just knowing facts about Jesus. It is trusting Him personally as Lord and Saviour.
(Romans 10:9–10, KJV) “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus,
and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”
To “believe in thine heart” means you rely on Christ alone; His death, burial, and resurrection., as your only hope of being right with God.
You stop trusting your goodness, your religion, your efforts, and put your full confidence in Jesus Christ.
God’s Word also says:
(Acts 20:21, KJV) “Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Salvation involves repentance toward God and faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ.
You must call upon the Lord
God gives a wonderful promise:
(Romans 10:13, KJV) “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
“Whosoever” includes you; no matter your past, your sins, your failures, your background, or your age.
To “call upon the name of the Lord” is to come to Him in faith, confessing your sin, your need, and your trust in Christ alone to save you.
Remember: the calling does not save you by itself; Christ saves you as you call upon Him in repentance and faith based on His finished work.
What Happens When I Am Saved?
When a sinner truly repents and believes on the Lord Jesus Christ, God does a powerful work in that person’s life.
You are forgiven and justified
(Acts 13:38–39, KJV) “Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.”
To be justified means God declares you righteous in His sight; not because of your works, but because of Christ’s righteousness credited to you.
You receive eternal life
(Romans 6:23, KJV) “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
(John 3:16–18, KJV) “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son,
that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”
Eternal life is not just “living forever;” everyone will exist forever somewhere. Eternal life is knowing God, being in right relationship with Him, and being rescued from condemnation.
You become a new creature in Christ
(2 Corinthians 5:17, KJV) “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature:
old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
Salvation is not just a change of label or church. It is a change of heart. God makes you a new creature in Christ. Your desires, direction, and destiny are changed. You begin to grow in obedience, love, and holiness, not to earn salvation, but because you have been saved.
Can I Really Know That I Am Saved?
Salvation comes by hearing the Word of God (Romans 10:17), yet hearing alone is not sufficient without a genuine response that results in a transformed life.
Scripture teaches that those who are truly born again experience a change in direction, conduct, and desire—“old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17).
This new life is not merely religious activity but a personal, ongoing relationship with Jesus Christ, made possible through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:9–10).
The Bible describes this transformation as a new walk and a new way of living (Ephesians 4:22–24), evidenced through faithfulness in fellowship, prayer, study of God’s Word, and mutual encouragement within the body of Christ, where believers are called to “bear ye one another’s burdens” (Galatians 6:2; Acts 2:42).
Christianity is not a one-time decision or a “ticket to heaven,” but a daily, continual relationship with Christ—lived out twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week—marked by obedience, growth, and a life shaped by the presence and power of the Holy Spirit (John 15:4–5).
Many people hope they are saved, but God wants you to know. His Word gives assurance to those who have truly trusted Christ.
(1 John 5:11–13, KJV) “And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.”
Notice:
- Eternal life is “in his Son.”
- If you have the Son, you have life.
- God has written these things so that you “may know” you have eternal life.
Assurance does not come from feelings or performance, but from trusting God’s promise in His Word.
Why Must I Be Saved Now?
Some know the truth but keep putting off this decision. They plan to “get right with God later.” But God warns against delay.
(2 Corinthians 6:2, KJV) “(For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted,
and in the day of salvation have I succored thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)”
You are not promised tomorrow. Death may come suddenly. Christ may return at any moment. Your heart can grow harder with each rejection of God’s call. God has graciously given you now, this moment to repent and believe.
A Simple Summary from Scripture
From the Word of God, we have seen:
You are a sinner.
(Romans 3:23, KJV) “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”
Your sin leads to death and judgment.
(Romans 6:23, KJV) “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
(Hebrews 9:27, KJV) “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:”
God loves you and gave His Son for you.
(Romans 5:8, KJV) “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
Salvation is by grace through faith, not works.
(Ephesians 2:8–9, KJV) “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
You must repent and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.
(Acts 16:30–31, KJV) “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.”
(Acts 20:21, KJV) “Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.”
If you confess and believe, you will be saved.
(Romans 10:13, KJV) “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
You can know you have eternal life.
(1 John 5:12, KJV) “He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.”
Will You Come to Christ Today?
The most important question you will ever ask is not, “What do others think of me?” or “How successful am I?” but “What must I do to be saved?” God has answered you from His Word:
(Acts 16:31, KJV) “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.”
If God is dealing with your heart, you can turn to Him right now. There is no special formula of words, but if you truly repent and believe in your heart, you may express that faith to God in prayer.
(John 3:18, KJV) “He that believeth on him is not condemned…”
(1 John 5:12, KJV) “He that hath the Son hath life…”
This is God’s answer; not man’s opinion to the greatest question you will ever ask:
“What must I do to be saved?”
“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.”
If the Holy Spirit is pulling at your heart strings today, give in to Him and follow the prayer below for your salvation in Jesus Christ!
Come! He’s Waiting on You!
Prayer to Salvation
Heavenly Father,
I come before You today admitting that I am a sinner in need of Your mercy and grace. Your Word says in Romans 10:9–10 that if I confess with my mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in my heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, I shall be saved.
Today, I confess Jesus Christ as my Lord and my Savior. I believe with all my heart that He died for my sins, was buried, and rose again the third day.
Lord Jesus, I ask You to forgive me of all my sins. Wash me clean in Your precious blood. I turn from my old life and surrender fully to You. Come into my heart, make me a new creature, and fill me with the Holy Spirit.
From this day forward, I choose to follow You, live by Your Word, and walk in the new life You have given me.
Thank You, Lord, for saving me, for forgiving me, and for writing my name in the Lamb’s Book of Life. I give You all the glory, honor, and praise.
In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
