The Age of the Gentiles: A Timeline Study

Introduction: What Do People Mean by “The Age of the Gentiles”?

When many believers say “the Age of the Gentiles,” they are usually describing a long period in history where Gentile nations hold ruling power over Jerusalem and the Jewish people experience national scattering and subjection, while God also brings salvation to the nations through the gospel of Christ.

But Scripture uses two key Bible phrases that people often blend together: They are definitely two separate events!

  1. The times of the Gentiles (spoken by Jesus) — connected to Jerusalem being “trodden down” by Gentiles. “The Times of the Gentiles;” will be fulfilled at the 2nd Advent/Christ’s Return at the Battle of Armageddon.
  1. The fulness of the Gentiles (taught by Paul) — connected to Gentiles being brought into salvation during Israel’s partial blindness. “The Fulness of the Gentiles;” will be fulfilled at the Rapture of the Church.

Both are real Bible themes. They overlap in history, but they are not identical phrases, and the safest approach is to let the Bible define its own terms.

The Key Bible Text: “The Times of the Gentiles

Jesus Defines It (Luke 21:24)

Jesus gave a prophetic marker that must be taken seriously because He ties it directly to Jerusalem:

Luke 21:24 (KJV)
“And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.

From this single verse, Scripture gives several clear points:

  • There would be a great fall “by the edge of the sword.”
  • There would be a scattering: “led away captive into all nations.”
  • There would be a Gentile domination over Jerusalem: “trodden down of the Gentiles.”
  • This would last until something reaches completion: “until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.”

So “the times of the Gentiles” is not a vague idea. It is linked to Jerusalem and to Gentile control/pressure continuing for a defined season that ends when God’s prophetic timetable reaches its appointed fulfillment.

The “Times of the Gentiles,” Will be fulfilled at the 2nd Advent/Christ’s Return at the Battle of Armageddon.

The Old Testament Foundation: Why Gentile Rule Began

The Captivity Was Not Random — It Was Judgment for Sin

Before the Babylonian captivity, God repeatedly warned Judah that persistent rebellion would bring national punishment. The captivity (and Gentile domination beginning with Babylon) came because Judah refused to hear God’s words.

2 Chronicles 36:14–16 (KJV)
“Moreover all the chief of the priests, and the people, transgressed very much after all the abominations of the heathen; and polluted the house of the LORD which he had hallowed in Jerusalem.
And the LORD God of their fathers sent to them by his messengers, rising up betimes, and sending; because he had compassion on his people, and on his dwelling place:
But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, till there was no remedy.

This is the moral reason behind the shift. When God’s people rejected His covenant truth, God used Gentile empires as instruments of discipline. That discipline does not cancel God’s promises to Israel — but it does explain why Gentile kingdoms rose to dominance in the prophetic storyline.

The Prophetic Timeline Begins: Babylon and the “Image” of Daniel 2

Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream: The Great Image (Daniel 2)

God gave King Nebuchadnezzar a dream that Daniel interpreted, showing a sequence of world empires. This is one of the clearest “timeline” passages for Gentile dominion.

Daniel 2:31–35 (KJV)
“Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee; and the form thereof was terrible.
This image’s head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass,
His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay.
Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces.
Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.”

Daniel then interprets the head of gold as Babylon:

Daniel 2:37–38 (KJV)
“Thou, O king, art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory.
And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold.

Then Daniel shows successive kingdoms:

Daniel 2:39–40 (KJV)
“And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee, and another third kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth.
And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things…”

Finally, Daniel reveals the end of Gentile world-rule as God’s Kingdom crushes the entire system:

Daniel 2:44–45 (KJV)
“And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.
Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter…”

Timeline truth from Daniel 2:

  • Gentile empires rise in sequence.
  • They rule the world (and therefore pressure Jerusalem and God’s people).
  • God ends the final stage by establishing an unending Kingdom that crushes the Gentile system.

The Same Timeline Told Another Way: Daniel 7 and the Four Beasts

Daniel 7 repeats the same prophecy, but instead of a shining image (man-centered splendor), God shows Daniel the kingdoms as beasts (their true nature).

Daniel 7:2–7 (KJV)
“Daniel spake and said, I saw in my vision by night, and, behold, the four winds of the heaven strove upon the great sea.
And four great beasts came up from the sea, diverse one from another.
The first was like a lion, and had eagle’s wings…
And behold another beast, a second, like to a bear…
After this I beheld, and lo another, like a leopard…
After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly…”

Then Daniel is told plainly what these beasts mean:

Daniel 7:17 (KJV)
“These great beasts, which are four, are four kings, which shall arise out of the earth.”

And Daniel again shows the end: the Son of man receives the kingdom: The Millennial Kingdom spoken of in Revelation, Chapter Nineteen.

Daniel 7:13–14 (KJV)
“I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him.
And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away…”

And the saints share in that kingdom:

Daniel 7:27 (KJV)
“And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High…”

Timeline truth from Daniel 7:

  • Gentile world empires rise and rule.
  • A final phase intensifies (Daniel emphasizes the terrifying fourth beast).
  • God brings the process to its end by giving the Kingdom to the Son of man, and the saints inherit under Him.

The Turning Point: The “Seventy Years” and the Return (But Not Full Freedom)

Daniel lived in the captivity and understood Jeremiah’s prophecy:

Jeremiah 29:10 (KJV)
“For thus saith the LORD, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.”

Daniel references this understanding:

Daniel 9:2 (KJV)
“In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.”

Israel returned from Babylonian captivity, but the story of Jerusalem afterward shows repeated Gentile pressures and occupations through later empires (Persia, Greece, Rome). The Bible’s message is that the captivity ended in one sense, but the larger prophetic theme of Gentile dominance over Jerusalem continued through time — precisely the kind of truth Jesus later summarized by saying Jerusalem would be “trodden down of the Gentiles.”

Another Key Phrase: “The Fulness of the Gentiles” (Romans 11)

Paul Explains Israel’s Blindness and Gentile Salvation

Paul reveals a “mystery” — something God was doing in the present age: “The ChurchAge!”

“The Church Age: Paul references as a “Mystery;” the Covenant God has made with the world, “Let whoever will come-The Hour of Grace!”

Romans 11:25–27 (KJV)
“For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.

“The Fulness of the Gentiles,” will be fulfilled at the Rapture of the Church.

And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob: For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.”

This teaches:

  • Israel experiences “blindness in part” (not total, not permanent).
  • This lasts “until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.” Which is the “Rapture of the Church.”
  • God is gathering Gentiles into salvation in a fullness that has an endpoint.
  • God has not canceled His covenant purpose with Israel.
  • The Covenant of “The Hour of Grace: The Church Age.”

Paul also warns Gentile believers not to become proud:

Romans 11:18–21 (KJV)
“Boast not against the branches… For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee.”

Timeline truth from Romans 11:

  • During this era, God is calling many Gentiles to salvation.
  • Israel’s national condition is described as partial blindness.
  • There is an “until” — God’s plan moves forward toward a future completion.
  • Once the Rapture of the Church Happens; God will turn His Eyes back to His Jewish Nation and the Seven Year Tribulation will begin.

A Simple Bible Timeline of the “Gentile Era” (Scripture Anchored)

Below is a scripture-driven timeline of how the Bible frames Gentile dominion and Gentile salvation.

1) Israel’s Kingdom Declines → Judgment Warnings Intensify

God sends prophets. Judah refuses. (2 Chronicles 36:14–16)

2) Babylon Rises → Jerusalem Falls → Captivity Begins

This begins a major era where Gentile empires dominate (Daniel 2; Daniel 7).

3) Successive Gentile Empires Continue

Daniel reveals a sequence of empires and an eventual final stage (Daniel 2:39–45; Daniel 7:17–27).

4) Jerusalem Remains Under Gentile Pressure (New Testament Confirmation)

Jesus: “Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until…” (Luke 21:24)

5) Gospel Goes to the Nations → “Fulness of the Gentiles”

Paul: Gentiles are being gathered into salvation while Israel experiences partial blindness (Romans 11:25–27).

6) God Brings Gentile World-Rule to Its End → Everlasting Kingdom

Daniel: the stone crushes the image; the Son of man receives the Kingdom (Daniel 2:44–45; Daniel 7:13–14).

What This Means for Believers Today

1) God Rules Over Kings and Nations

Daniel’s message is that world empires rise and fall, but God is never reacting in panic. He is sovereign over history.

Daniel 2:21 (KJV)
“And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:”

2) Jerusalem Matters in Bible Prophecy

Jesus tied “the times of the Gentiles” to Jerusalem being “trodden down.” Whatever people claim about prophecy, believers must honor what Christ emphasized.

Luke 21:24 (KJV)
“…and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.”

3) Gentile Believers Must Stay Humble and Grateful

Gentiles did not replace Israel by pride; Gentiles were grafted in by grace.

Romans 11:20 (KJV)
“…Be not highminded, but fear:”

4) God Is Not Finished With Israel

Romans 11 calls Israel’s condition a “blindness in part” and sets an “until,” showing God’s plan continues forward.

Romans 11:25 (KJV)
“…blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.”

5) The End of the Timeline Is Christ’s Unshakable Kingdom

Daniel’s prophecy does not end in chaos—it ends in the Kingdom that God sets up forever.

Daniel 2:44 (KJV)
“And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed…”

Conclusion: The Age of the Gentiles in One Sentence

According to Scripture, the “Gentile era” is the long prophetic season where Gentile dominion over Jerusalem and Gentile world empires run their course (Luke 21:24; Daniel 2; Daniel 7), while God also brings the gospel to the nations in a saving “fulness” (Romans 11:25), until God completes His appointed times and establishes His everlasting Kingdom (Daniel 2:44; Daniel 7:13–14).

Prayer to Salvation

Heavenly Father,
I come before You today admitting that I am a sinner in need of Your mercy and grace. Your Word says in Romans 10:9–10 that if I confess with my mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in my heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, I shall be saved. Today, I confess Jesus Christ as my Lord and my Savior. I believe with all my heart that He died for my sins, was buried, and rose again the third day.

Lord Jesus, I ask You to forgive me of all my sins. Wash me clean in Your precious blood. I turn from my old life and surrender fully to You. Come into my heart, make me a new creature, and fill me with the Holy Spirit. From this day forward, I choose to follow You, live by Your Word, and walk in the new life You have given me.

Thank You, Lord, for saving me, for forgiving me, and for writing my name in the Lamb’s Book of Life. I give You all the glory, honor, and praise.
In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
