January 15 – The Heart God Examines

Scripture — Jeremiah 17:9–10 (KJV)

9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
10 I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

Reflection

These verses confront a truth many would rather avoid: the human heart cannot be trusted on its own. Feelings, intentions, and personal reasoning can easily lead us astray.

God reminds us that without His truth and guidance, our hearts are capable of self-deception.

Yet this passage does not end in despair—it ends in hope. While we may not fully understand our own hearts, the Lord does.

God searches the heart with perfect knowledge and righteous judgment. He sees motives, weighs intentions, and responds with justice and mercy.

This should move us to humility, repentance, and a deeper dependence on God, allowing Him to shape our hearts according to His will rather than our own desires.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
I acknowledge that my heart needs Your truth and guidance.

Search me, examine me, and reveal anything in me that does not honor You. Shape my desires, purify my motives, and help me to walk in obedience to Your Word.

I trust You as the righteous Judge who knows me completely and loves me faithfully.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
