August 21 – When the Books Are Opened

Scripture (KJV) – Revelation 20:12

“And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.”

Reflection

There is coming a day when earthly position, wealth, popularity, and influence will mean absolutely nothing. John saw the dead, both small and great, standing before God. No one standing at this judgment will be able to hide behind reputation, possessions, or excuses. The books will be opened, and God’s judgment will be perfectly righteous.

This is one of the most solemn scenes in all of Scripture. It reminds us that God sees everything. Every hidden sin, every secret thought, every rejected opportunity to receive the truth, and every deed is known by Him. Nothing escapes His perfect knowledge.

But there is another book mentioned—the Book of Life. That should immediately turn our attention toward Jesus Christ. Salvation cannot be purchased through good works, church attendance, money, or religious activity. Eternal life is found only through faith in Christ, who shed His blood and rose again so that sinners could be forgiven.

Hell and final judgment are difficult subjects, but Jesus did not avoid them, and neither should we. Warning someone about judgment is not an absence of love. When spoken with compassion and truth, it is an expression of love. If we truly believe eternity is real, then we should desire that every person possible hear the Gospel while there is still time to respond.

For the believer, this Scripture should renew our burden for the lost. There are people around us every day who are moving toward eternity. Pray for them. Love them. Tell them about Jesus. Never become so occupied with temporary things that you forget what is eternal.

The books will one day be opened. Until then, the Gospel must continue to be proclaimed.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, this Scripture reminds me of the seriousness of eternity and the certainty of Your judgment. Thank You for providing salvation through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Give me a greater burden for those who do not know Him as Savior. Help me never to become careless about the souls of those around me. Give me compassion, wisdom, and boldness to share the Gospel while there is still time. Search my own heart and help me live faithfully before You, remembering that nothing in my life is hidden from Your sight. May everything I do bring honor to Jesus Christ. In His name, Amen.
