Reflection
It is easy to love people who love us. It is much harder to love someone who has hurt us, spoken against us, betrayed our trust, or treated us unfairly. Yet Jesus calls His followers to a standard of love that goes far beyond what comes naturally.
Jesus does not tell us merely to tolerate our enemies. He tells us to love them, do good to them, bless them, and pray for them. That does not mean we approve of sinful behavior or continually place ourselves in situations where someone can harm us. It means we refuse to allow hatred and bitterness to control our hearts.
Unforgiveness can become a prison. We may believe we are punishing the person who hurt us by holding onto resentment, but often we are the ones carrying the burden. Bitterness steals peace, damages relationships, and can interfere with our fellowship with God.
Think about the example of Jesus Christ. While He was being crucified, He prayed for those responsible for His suffering. The cross demonstrates a love that the world cannot understand—a love extended even toward those who did not deserve it.
Perhaps there is someone whose name immediately comes to mind as you read this. You may not be able to change what happened, and reconciliation may not always be possible, but you can choose what happens within your own heart.
Pray for that person. Ask God to remove bitterness and replace it with compassion. Forgiveness does not say that what happened was acceptable. It simply refuses to allow another person’s wrongdoing to control your heart any longer.
Anyone can love a friend. Christlike love is revealed when we choose to love those who have treated us like enemies.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me when I did not deserve Your love. Forgive me for the bitterness, anger, or resentment I have allowed to remain in my heart toward those who have hurt me. Give me the strength to forgive as You have forgiven me. Help me to pray for those who have mistreated me and to respond with grace rather than hatred. Give me wisdom to maintain healthy boundaries when necessary while keeping my heart free from bitterness. May the love of Jesus Christ be seen in me, especially when loving someone is difficult. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
