October 9 – When the Books Are Opened

Scripture (KJV) – Revelation 20:12

“And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.”

Reflection

The world often measures people by wealth, position, popularity, or influence. But Revelation shows us a coming day when those distinctions will mean absolutely nothing.

John sees the “small and great” standing before God.

No one will be able to hide behind reputation, possessions, excuses, or what other people thought about them. The books will be opened, and God’s judgment will be perfectly righteous.

This is the Great White Throne Judgment. These are the unsaved dead who stand before God before being cast into the lake of fire. Their works cannot save them. The terrible reality comes a few verses later: anyone whose name is not found written in the book of life is cast into the lake of fire.

That is why the Gospel is urgent.

God has provided a way for sinful people to be forgiven through Jesus Christ. Jesus died for our sins, was buried, and rose again. Salvation cannot be earned by accumulating enough good works. It must be received through faith in Christ.

For those of us who know Christ, this passage should also affect the way we see the lost. Hell should never be something we speak about carelessly. If we truly believe what Scripture teaches about eternal judgment, it should give us compassion for people who do not know Jesus.

There is still time today to come to Christ.

There is still time to tell someone else about Him.

One day the books will be opened. Make certain your name is written in the book of life.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, Your Word reminds me that judgment is real and eternity is forever. Thank You for sending Jesus Christ to die for my sins and providing the way of salvation. Help me examine my own life and never become careless about eternal things. Give me compassion for those who are lost and courage to tell them about Jesus while there is still time. May my life point others toward the Savior who alone can give eternal life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
