Reflection
One of the most dangerous conditions a person can develop is a hardened heart toward God. It rarely happens all at once. It begins when God speaks and we refuse to listen, when the Holy Spirit brings conviction and we ignore it, or when Scripture exposes something in our lives and we choose not to change.
Every time we resist God’s truth, it becomes a little easier to resist it again. Sin that once troubled our conscience can eventually become something we excuse or accept. That is why Scripture gives such an urgent warning: “To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.”
God’s conviction is an expression of His mercy. When He exposes sin, He is giving us an opportunity to repent. When He calls us to change, it is because He desires fellowship with us and wants to protect us from the destruction that sin brings.
There is also an eternal seriousness to this warning. No one should assume that there will always be another opportunity to respond to God. Life is uncertain, and judgment is real. A person who continually rejects Jesus Christ should never presume that tomorrow will provide another opportunity for salvation.
If God is speaking to your heart today, respond today. Do not wait until the conviction becomes weaker or the heart becomes harder. Confess what needs to be confessed, surrender what needs to be surrendered, forgive whom you need to forgive, and obey what God has already shown you.
A tender heart responds when God speaks.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, keep my heart tender toward You. When Your Word exposes something wrong in my life, help me not to make excuses or resist Your conviction. Give me humility to repent quickly and courage to obey You completely. Protect my heart from becoming comfortable with sin or indifferent toward Your voice. Give me a greater burden for those who continue to reject Jesus Christ, and help me faithfully share the Gospel while there is still time. May I walk closely with You and remain sensitive to Your leading every day of my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
