Scripture (KJV) – Mark 8:36-37
“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?”
Reflection
The world teaches us to measure success by what we possess. Money, houses, careers, recognition, and possessions can easily become the things people spend their entire lives pursuing. Yet Jesus asks a question that brings everything into an eternal perspective: What good would it do to gain the entire world if, in the end, you lost your own soul?
Nothing we possess on this earth will follow us into eternity. Every dollar will be left behind. Every possession will belong to someone else. Every earthly accomplishment will eventually fade from memory. But the soul will live forever.
That is why salvation is the most important matter any person will ever face. Hell is real, judgment is certain, and eternity is forever. But God, in His great love, provided the way of salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ. Christ paid a price for our redemption that silver and gold could never purchase.
This Scripture should also challenge those of us who already know Christ. We must be careful that temporary things do not consume the time and attention that belong to God. There is nothing wrong with working, providing for our families, or enjoying God’s blessings, but none of these things should become more important than our relationship with Him.
Take an honest look at your priorities today. Are you investing your life primarily in things that will eventually disappear, or are you living for what will matter throughout eternity?
The whole world is not worth the price of one soul.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me of the eternal value of the soul. Forgive me for the times I have allowed temporary things to become more important than my relationship with You. Help me to keep my priorities centered upon Jesus Christ and the things that have eternal value. Give me a greater burden for those who are lost and facing eternity without Christ. Help me faithfully share the Gospel and use the life You have given me for Your glory. May I never exchange what is eternal for what is temporary. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
