Heaven Opens: The Glorious Return of Jesus Christ

A Detailed Biblical Article on Revelation 19

By: Junior Tate

Revelation chapter 19 is one of the most powerful and glorious chapters in the entire Bible. It shows the moment when heaven opens and Jesus Christ returns to the earth in power, glory, righteousness, and judgment. This is not Christ coming in humility as He did at Bethlehem. This is not Christ standing silent before His accusers. This is not Christ being mocked, beaten, and crucified by sinful men. Revelation 19 reveals Jesus Christ as King of kings and Lord of lords.

The first coming of Christ was marked by humility. He came as the Lamb of God to take away the sin of the world. He came to die for sinners, shed His blood, and provide salvation for all who believe. But His second coming will be marked by majesty, authority, and divine judgment. He will return as the conquering King.

Revelation 19 takes place near the close of the Tribulation period. The world has followed the beast, embraced rebellion, rejected God, worshipped the image of the beast, and gathered itself against the Lord. The Antichrist has deceived the nations. The false prophet has promoted false worship. Babylon has fallen. Heaven now rejoices because God’s righteous judgment has come.

This chapter reveals several major truths. Heaven worships God for His righteous judgment. The marriage of the Lamb is announced. The true Bride is seen clothed in fine linen. John is reminded to worship God alone. Then heaven opens, and Jesus Christ rides forth on a white horse to judge and make war in righteousness.

This is not symbolic of human government. This is not the church gradually improving the world. This is the literal, visible, glorious return of Jesus Christ as described in Scripture.

Heaven Rejoices Over the Righteous Judgment of God

Revelation 19:1-2 (KJV)

“1 And after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven, saying, Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and honour, and power, unto the Lord our God:

2 For true and righteous are his judgments: for he hath judged the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of his servants at her hand.”

The chapter begins with worship in heaven. The phrase “after these things” connects Revelation 19 with the events that came before it. Revelation 17 and 18 described the judgment of Babylon, both religious and commercial. Babylon represented spiritual corruption, false worship, rebellion against God, and the world system that opposed Christ.

Heaven does not mourn the fall of Babylon. Heaven rejoices because God’s judgment is true and righteous. This is important because the world often questions the judgment of God. Men may accuse God of being too severe, but heaven declares that His judgments are true and righteous.

The word “Alleluia” means praise ye the Lord. Heaven praises God because salvation, glory, honour, and power belong to Him. The world had glorified itself, but now heaven gives glory to God. The kingdoms of men rise and fall, but the kingdom of Christ is eternal.

God judged Babylon because she corrupted the earth. False religion and worldly rebellion had led multitudes away from the truth. The blood of God’s servants had been shed, and now God avenges them. This shows that God does not forget the suffering of His people. The martyrs who cried out earlier in Revelation are now answered by divine justice.

Revelation 6:9-10 (KJV)

“9 And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:

10 And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?”

Revelation 19 shows that God’s answer comes in His time. He may delay judgment, but He never forgets righteousness. The Lord sees every act of persecution, every drop of innocent blood, and every injustice done against His people.

The Smoke of Babylon’s Judgment Rises Forever

Revelation 19:3 (KJV)

“3 And again they said, Alleluia. And her smoke rose up for ever and ever.”

Heaven says “Alleluia” again. The judgment of Babylon is final. Her smoke rises up forever and ever. This language shows complete and irreversible judgment. The world system that exalted itself against God will not rise again.

In the Old Testament, the destruction of wicked cities was often described with smoke rising as a testimony of judgment. When God judged Sodom and Gomorrah, Abraham saw the smoke of the land going up.

Genesis 19:28 (KJV)

“28 And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace.”

Just as Sodom became an example of divine judgment, Babylon’s fall becomes a final witness that God will overthrow wickedness. The world may boast for a season, but sin never has the final word. God does.

The Elders and the Living Creatures Worship God

Revelation 19:4 (KJV)

“4 And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne, saying, Amen; Alleluia.”

The twenty-four elders and the four beasts fall down and worship God. Throughout Revelation, these heavenly beings are seen around the throne, giving worship to God. Their response is simple but powerful: “Amen; Alleluia.”

“Amen” means truly, so be it, or let it be established. Heaven agrees with God’s judgment. Heaven does not argue with God. Heaven does not question His justice. Heaven worships.

This is a reminder that true worship agrees with God. True worship does not try to correct God, soften His Word, or explain away His judgment. True worship bows before His holiness and says, “Amen.”

All God’s Servants Are Called to Praise Him

Revelation 19:5 (KJV)

“5 And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God, all ye his servants, and ye that fear him, both small and great.”

A voice comes from the throne calling all servants of God to praise Him. This includes all who fear Him, both small and great. In God’s kingdom, earthly rank does not determine the worth of worship. The great and the small are both called to praise the Lord.

This is a beautiful reminder that every believer has a place in worship. God receives praise from the unknown servant as well as the well-known preacher. He receives praise from the poor widow, the faithful teacher, the missionary, the pastor, the child of God in secret prayer, and every redeemed soul.

The fear of the Lord is mentioned here. This is not sinful terror for the believer, but reverence, awe, honor, and submission before God. The world did not fear God during the Tribulation. The followers of the beast blasphemed God rather than repenting. But those who belong to God fear Him and praise Him.

The Lord God Omnipotent Reigneth

Revelation 19:6 (KJV)

“6 And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.”

John hears a sound like a great multitude, like many waters, and like mighty thunderings. Heaven erupts in praise because “the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.”

The word “omnipotent” means all-powerful. God has unlimited power. No kingdom can overthrow Him. No devil can defeat Him. No Antichrist can stand against Him. No army can resist Him. No political system can remove Him from His throne.

This is one of the great declarations of Revelation. During the Tribulation, it may have appeared that the beast was ruling the world. It may have looked like evil was winning. It may have seemed that the saints were being overcome. But Revelation 19 reveals the truth: the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.

God has never lost control. He has never surrendered His throne. He has never been surprised by the actions of Satan or man. The final outcome has always belonged to Him.

The Marriage of the Lamb Has Come

Revelation 19:7-8 (KJV)

“7 Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.

8 And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.”

Heaven now announces the marriage of the Lamb. This is one of the most beautiful pictures in Scripture. Jesus Christ is the Lamb, and His wife is made ready. The Bride is clothed in fine linen, clean and white.

The fine linen is described as “the righteousness of saints.” Salvation is by grace through faith, not by works. Yet the righteous acts and faithful obedience of God’s people are seen in connection with the Bride’s clothing. The Bride is not dressed in the filth of the world. She is clothed in purity.

The Bible often uses marriage to describe the relationship between Christ and His people. Paul wrote of Christ’s love for the church.

Ephesians 5:25-27 (KJV)

“25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.”

Christ gave Himself for the church. He purchased her with His own blood. He cleanses, sanctifies, and prepares His people for Himself. Revelation 19 shows the glory of that relationship in heaven.

Blessed Are They Called to the Marriage Supper

Revelation 19:9 (KJV)

“9 And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.”

Those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb are blessed. This is not imagination. The angel tells John, “These are the true sayings of God.”

That phrase is important. The promises of God are not myths. The prophetic Word of God is not guesswork. The return of Christ, the marriage supper, the judgment of evil, and the reign of Christ are true sayings of God.

The believer’s hope is not built on human optimism. It is built on the written Word of God.

Worship God Alone

Revelation 19:10 (KJV)

“10 And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”

John is overwhelmed and falls at the feet of the angel. The angel immediately corrects him: “See thou do it not.” Worship belongs to God alone.

This is an important verse because it shows that no created being is worthy of worship. Angels are powerful, but they are not God. Prophets are servants, but they are not God. Preachers are messengers, but they are not God. Worship must be directed to the Lord alone.

The angel then says, “the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” All true prophecy points to Jesus Christ. The prophetic Scriptures are not given merely to satisfy curiosity about future events. They reveal the glory, authority, kingdom, judgment, and victory of Christ.

Revelation is not primarily about the beast. It is not primarily about world events. It is the Revelation of Jesus Christ.

Revelation 1:1 (KJV)

“1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass…”

The central figure of prophecy is Jesus.

Heaven Opens

Revelation 19:11 (KJV)

“11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.”

This is the great turning point. John sees heaven opened. When heaven opens, Christ comes forth.

Earlier in Revelation, a rider on a white horse appeared in Revelation 6. That rider is connected with deception and conquest, not Christ. But Revelation 19 shows the true King riding forth from heaven.

Jesus is called “Faithful and True.” Every promise He has made is faithful. Every word He speaks is true. Men have lied, kings have deceived, false prophets have misled, and the Antichrist has corrupted the nations. But Jesus Christ is Faithful and True.

He judges and makes war in righteousness. This separates Christ’s war from human war. Human wars are often filled with pride, greed, revenge, and corruption. Christ makes war in perfect righteousness. His judgment is holy, just, and true.

His Eyes Were as a Flame of Fire

Revelation 19:12 (KJV)

“12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.”

His eyes are as a flame of fire. This speaks of piercing judgment, divine knowledge, and holy inspection. Nothing is hidden from Him. He sees through every lie, every false profession, every evil motive, and every hidden sin.

This same description appears earlier in Revelation.

Revelation 1:14 (KJV)

“14 His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire;”

Jesus is not returning as a helpless victim. He is returning as the all-seeing Judge.

On His head are many crowns. The beast in Revelation had crowns, but his authority was temporary and permitted. Christ has many crowns because all authority belongs to Him. He is King over every king and Lord over every lord.

He has a name written that no man knew but He Himself. This reminds us that Christ is greater than human understanding. We know what God has revealed, but the fullness of Christ’s glory is beyond man’s complete comprehension.

Clothed With a Vesture Dipped in Blood

Revelation 19:13 (KJV)

“13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.”

Christ is clothed with a vesture dipped in blood. This image is connected with judgment. Isaiah also describes the Lord coming in judgment with garments stained.

Isaiah 63:2-4 (KJV)

“2 Wherefore art thou red in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winefat?

3 I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will tread them in mine anger, and trample them in my fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my raiment.

4 For the day of vengeance is in mine heart, and the year of my redeemed is come.”

Revelation 19 is not only about comfort. It is also about the righteous wrath of Christ against rebellion. The same Jesus who saves by grace will judge the wicked in righteousness.

His name is called “The Word of God.” John’s Gospel also identifies Jesus as the Word.

John 1:1-3 (KJV)

“1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 The same was in the beginning with God.

3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.”

The One returning in Revelation 19 is not merely a messenger from God. He is the eternal Word, the Creator, the Son of God, and the King of glory.

The Armies in Heaven Follow Him

Revelation 19:14 (KJV)

“14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.”

The armies in heaven follow Christ. They are clothed in fine linen, white and clean. Christ does not return alone. Heaven follows Him.

The Saints are the Church who wear Fine Linin.

The text does not say these armies fight in their own strength. The power belongs to Christ. He is the Commander. He is the Victor. He is the One who judges.

This scene displays the majesty of the King and the triumph of His kingdom. The world’s armies gather below, but heaven’s armies descend with Christ.

Out of His Mouth Goeth a Sharp Sword

Revelation 19:15 (KJV)

“15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations…”

The sharp sword proceeds out of His mouth. This shows the power of His Word. Christ does not need earthly weapons to defeat His enemies. He speaks, and judgment falls.

The Word of God is powerful.

Hebrews 4:12 (KJV)

“12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword…”

At creation, God spoke and the world came into existence. At the return of Christ, He speaks and the nations are judged. His Word is enough.

He Shall Rule With a Rod of Iron

Revelation 19:15 (KJV)

“15 …and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.”

Christ will rule with a rod of iron. This connects directly with Old Testament prophecy.

Psalm 2:8-9 (KJV)

“8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.

9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.”

Psalm 2 describes the nations raging against the Lord and His Anointed. Revelation 19 shows the fulfillment of that prophetic truth. The nations may rebel, but Christ will reign.

The phrase “winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God” is a sobering picture of judgment. The wicked have rejected grace, followed the beast, and gathered against Christ. Now they face the wrath of Almighty God.

King of Kings and Lord of Lords

Revelation 19:16 (KJV)

“16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”

This is one of the most majestic titles in Scripture. Jesus is KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

Every earthly ruler is beneath Him. Every throne is subject to Him. Every president, king, dictator, emperor, and world leader must bow before Him. The Antichrist may claim authority, but Christ possesses all authority.

Paul wrote that every knee will bow before Jesus.

Philippians 2:9-11 (KJV)

“9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:

10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

The return of Christ is the public revelation of what has always been true. Jesus is Lord.

The Supper of the Great God

Revelation 19:17-18 (KJV)

“17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God;

18 That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men…”

This is a terrible contrast to the marriage supper of the Lamb. The righteous are called to blessing, but the wicked are called to judgment.

The angel calls the birds to gather for the supper of the great God. This shows the complete defeat of those who oppose Christ. Their earthly status will not save them. Kings, captains, mighty men, horses, riders, free men, bondmen, small and great are all included.

No class of society can stand against the returning Christ. Wealth cannot protect them. Military strength cannot defend them. Political power cannot rescue them. Religious deception cannot hide them.

The Beast and the Kings of the Earth Gather Against Christ

Revelation 19:19 (KJV)

“19 And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.”

This verse reveals the madness of human rebellion. The beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies gather to make war against Jesus Christ.

This is the final arrogance of sinful man under satanic deception. Instead of repenting, they fight. Instead of bowing, they rage. Instead of surrendering, they gather for war.

Psalm 2 describes this spirit of rebellion.

Psalm 2:1-3 (KJV)

“1 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?

2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying,

3 Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.”

Revelation 19 shows the final outcome of that rebellion. The nations gather, but Christ conquers.

The Beast and False Prophet Are Cast Into the Lake of Fire

Revelation 19:20 (KJV)

“20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet…”

The beast and the false prophet are seized. There is no long battle. There is no equal struggle. Christ does not barely win. The beast is taken.

The false prophet had deceived those who received the mark of the beast and worshipped his image. False religion and political rebellion worked together during the Tribulation. But both are judged by Christ.

Revelation 19:20 (KJV)

“20 …These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.”

This is the first mention of the lake of fire in Revelation. The beast and false prophet are cast alive into it. Their judgment is immediate and final.

This shows the seriousness of deception, blasphemy, and rebellion against God. The Antichrist will not rule forever. The false prophet will not deceive forever. Their end is destruction.

The Remnant Are Slain by the Sword of Christ

Revelation 19:21 (KJV)

“21 And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth…”

Those who remain are slain by the sword that proceeds from Christ’s mouth. Again, this emphasizes the power of His Word. The enemies of Christ fall before Him.

Revelation 19:21 (KJV)

“21 …and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.”

This is a dreadful picture, but it is Scripture. It reveals the end of rebellion against God. Sin may appear powerful for a season, but it ends in judgment.

The Return of Christ Is Literal and Visible

The Bible teaches that Jesus will return visibly.

Acts 1:9-11 (KJV)

“9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up…”

When Jesus ascended into heaven, the disciples watched Him go. Then two men in white apparel told them that He would return in like manner.

Acts 1:11 (KJV)

“11 …Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus… shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.”

The same Jesus who ascended will return. His return is not merely spiritualized language. It is real, visible, and bodily.

Jesus also said:

Matthew 24:30 (KJV)

“30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven…”

The tribes of the earth will see Him coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. Revelation 19 gives the heavenly view of that same glorious return.

The Return of Christ Is Different From His First Coming

At His first coming, Jesus came in humility.

Luke 2:7 (KJV)

“7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes…”

At His second coming, He comes with the armies of heaven.

At His first coming, He rode into Jerusalem meek and lowly.

Matthew 21:5 (KJV)

“5 Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek…”

At His second coming, He rides forth as King of kings and Lord of lords.

At His first coming, He wore a crown of thorns.

Matthew 27:29 (KJV)

“29 And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head…”

At His second coming, He wears many crowns.

At His first coming, He was judged by sinful men. At His second coming, He judges the nations.

At His first coming, He was silent before His accusers. At His second coming, a sharp sword proceeds from His mouth.

At His first coming, He came to provide salvation. At His second coming, He comes to execute judgment and establish His kingdom.

The Faithfulness of Bible Prophecy

Revelation 19 proves that Bible prophecy centers on Jesus Christ. The Old Testament prophets spoke of a coming King, a righteous ruler, a Messiah who would reign.

Zechariah 14:3-4 (KJV)

“3 Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.

4 And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives…”

This prophecy points to the Lord going forth to fight against the nations and standing upon the Mount of Olives. Revelation 19 reveals Christ coming from heaven to defeat His enemies.

Daniel 7:13-14 (KJV)

“13 I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven…”

Daniel saw the Son of man receiving dominion, glory, and a kingdom. Revelation 19 shows the King coming to claim what belongs to Him.

What This Means for Believers

Revelation 19 should strengthen the faith of every believer.

First, it reminds us that Jesus wins. No matter how dark the world becomes, Christ is victorious.

Second, it reminds us that evil will not rule forever. The Antichrist, the false prophet, Babylon, and the rebellious nations all come under divine judgment.

Third, it reminds us that worship belongs to God alone. John was corrected when he fell before the angel. The church must keep its eyes on Christ.

Fourth, it reminds us that prophecy is about Jesus. The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

Fifth, it reminds us that believers should live ready. Christ is coming again. The world may ignore Him, but the Word of God is sure.

A Warning to the Lost

Revelation 19 is glorious for the believer but terrifying for the unbeliever. Those who reject Christ will not escape His judgment. The same Jesus who offers salvation today will judge rebellion in that day.

The gospel invitation is still open now.

Romans 10:9-10 (KJV)

“9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus…”

Salvation is not found in religion, good works, church membership, or self-righteousness. Salvation is found only in Jesus Christ.

Acts 4:12 (KJV)

“12 Neither is there salvation in any other…”

The world in Revelation 19 had followed the beast and rejected God. But today, sinners can still come to Christ by faith.

Conclusion

Revelation 19 reveals one of the greatest moments in all of prophecy. Heaven opens, and Jesus Christ returns in glory. He is called Faithful and True. His eyes are as a flame of fire. On His head are many crowns. His name is called The Word of God. The armies of heaven follow Him. Out of His mouth goes a sharp sword. He rules with a rod of iron. On His vesture and on His thigh is written: KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

This chapter reminds us that Jesus Christ is not defeated, delayed, or uncertain. He is coming again. The kingdoms of this world will fall. The beast will be judged. The false prophet will be cast into the lake of fire. The rebellious armies of the earth will be destroyed. Christ will reign.

For the believer, this is a message of hope. For the lost, it is a warning. For the church, it is a call to worship, holiness, faithfulness, and readiness.

Heaven will open. The King will come. Every eye will see Him. Every knee will bow. Every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

If the Holy Spirit is convicting and pulling at your heart strings today, give in to Him and follow the prayer below for your salvation in Jesus Christ!

Prayer to Salvation

Heavenly Father,
I come before You today admitting that I am a sinner in need of Your mercy and grace.

Your Word says in Romans 10:9–10 that if I confess with my mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in my heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, I shall be saved.

Today, I confess Jesus Christ as my Lord and my Savior. I believe with all my heart that He died for my sins, was buried, and rose again the third day.

Lord Jesus, I ask You to forgive me of all my sins. Wash me clean in Your precious blood. I turn from my old life and surrender fully to You.

Come into my heart, make me a new creature, and fill me with the Holy Spirit. From this day forward, I choose to follow You, live by Your Word, and walk in the new life You have given me.

Thank You, Lord, for saving me, for forgiving me, and for writing my name in the Lamb’s Book of Life. I give You all the glory, honor, and praise.

In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
