A Complete, In-Depth Biblical Study Using the King James Version
By Junior Tate Ministries
The Book of Revelation reveals a series of escalating judgments that will shake the earth during the future Tribulation period.
These judgments do not originate from man, nature, war, or politics; they come directly from the throne of God.
The Seven Trumpets are the second major sequence of judgments in Revelation, following the Seven Seals and preceding the Seven Vials.
Trumpets in Scripture are used for warnings, calls to assembly, signals of war, and announcements of God’s intervention.
In Revelation, the Trumpets are heaven’s alarms; a series of supernatural blows of judgment announcing that the time of God’s wrath has come upon an unbelieving world.
This article explores each trumpet in detail using the full King James Version text, providing a clear, scripture-centered understanding of these earth-shaking events.
THE SCENE IN HEAVEN BEFORE THE TRUMPETS SOUND
Before the first trumpet sounds, Scripture gives us a powerful picture of what takes place in heaven.
The Seventh Seal Opens the Way for the Trumpets
Revelation 8:1–2 (KJV)
“And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour. And I saw the seven angels which stood before God; and to them were given seven trumpets.”
When the seventh seal is opened, heaven falls completely silent. No worship, no praise, no angelic voices. The silence demonstrates awe, anticipation, and the weight of God’s coming judgments.
Seven angels stand before God, and He gives them seven trumpets. These angels will unleash judgments that affect land, sea, rivers, skies, humanity, and demonic realms.
The Prayers of the Saints Are Connected to the Judgments
Revelation 8:3–5 (KJV)
“And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne. And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel’s hand. And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast it into the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake.”
Before the Trumpet Judgment begins, the prayers of the saints rise before God. God responds to the cries of His people for justice, righteousness, and the vindication of His name.
Fire from the altar is thrown to earth, showing that the trumpet judgments are God’s answer to prayer, not random chaos.
THE FIRST TRUMPET: DEVASTATION ON THE EARTH
Revelation 8:7 (KJV)
“The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.”
What Scripture Says
- Hail and fire mixed with blood fall from heaven.
- One-third of all trees are burned.
- All green grass is burned.
This judgment targets Earth’s vegetation, agriculture, and natural oxygen-producing systems. Trees and grass are essential for food, wildlife habitat, air quality, and climate.
God touches the earth’s ecological foundation.
This is not symbolic; it explicitly states that fire and hail fall from the sky and burn vegetation.
Similar judgments occurred in Egypt (Exodus 9:22–26), showing that God can literally send fire and hail.
THE SECOND TRUMPET: JUDGMENT ON THE SEAS
Revelation 8:8–9 (KJV)
“And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;
And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.”
What Scripture Says
- Something “as it were a great mountain burning with fire” is thrown into the sea.
- One-third of the sea becomes blood.
- One-third of marine life dies.
- One-third of ships are destroyed.
The sea—covering 70% of the earth—experiences catastrophic judgment.
The phrase “as it were” shows John describing something massive, fiery, and mountain-like.
The effects are literal: blood-filled waters, dead creatures, and destroyed ships.
This brings:
- Shipping collapse
- Economic destruction
- Food supply instability
- Massive loss of life
THE THIRD TRUMPET: WORMWOOD AND THE POISONED WATERS
Revelation 8:10–11 (KJV)
“And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters;
And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.”
What Scripture Says
- A “great star” falls from heaven; burning like a torch.
- It contaminates one-third of rivers and freshwater sources.
- The star is named Wormwood, meaning bitterness.
- Many die because the water becomes poisoned.
This is a judgment on drinking water, the most essential resource for life.
The name is given by God Himself, showing this is not a symbolic name but a real event.
Humanity cannot survive long without clean water, so this judgment will cause:
- Widespread sickness
- Dehydration
- Panic
- Massive death
THE FOURTH TRUMPET: DARKENING OF THE HEAVENS
Revelation 8:12 (KJV)
“And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.”
What Scripture Says
- One-third of the sun, moon, and stars are darkened.
- Daylight decreases by one-third.
- Nighttime light decreases by one-third.
This judgment affects:
- Temperature
- Agriculture
- Human psychology
- Tides
- Navigation
- Energy production
Darkness in Scripture often symbolizes judgment (Exodus 10:21, Joel 2:31), but in Revelation it is literal. The world enters a period of chilling, fear, and global instability.
A Warning Before the Final Three Trumpets
Before the fifth trumpet begins, an angel gives a dramatic warning.
Revelation 8:13 (KJV)
“And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound!”
The last three trumpets are so severe that God labels them “Woes.” The judgments intensify dramatically.
THE FIFTH TRUMPET — DEMONIC LOCUSTS FROM THE BOTTOMLESS PIT
(First Woe)
Revelation 9:1–2 (KJV)
“And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.
And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.”
A Fallen Angel Unleashes the Abyss
The “star” is not a literal star—because “to him was given the key.” This is an angelic being, likely a fallen angel, given permission by God to open the bottomless pit (Abyss).
Demonic Locusts Released
Revelation 9:3–6 (KJV)
“And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power…
And it was given them that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months…
And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.”
What Scripture Says Clearly
- These are not normal locusts.
- They do not eat vegetation (v. 4).
- They attack only unbelievers—those “who have not the seal of God.”
- Their torment lasts five months.
- Pain is so severe that men long for death but cannot die.
What They Look Like (According to Scripture Alone)
Revelation 9:7–11 describes their appearance:
- Like horses prepared for battle
- Faces like men
- Hair like women
- Teeth like lions
- Breastplates like iron
- Wings with sound like many chariots
- Tails like scorpions
They have a king:
Revelation 9:11 (KJV)
“And they had a king over them… whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.”
This trumpet is a demonic judgment released directly from the Abyss.
THE SIXTH TRUMPET: AN ARMY OF 200 MILLION AND GLOBAL DESTRUCTION
(Second Woe)
Revelation 9:13–14 (KJV)
“And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God,
Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates.”
Four Bound Angels Released
These angels are bound, meaning they are evil angels—holy angels are never described as bound. They have been prepared for a specific moment in history.
Their Mission
Revelation 9:15 (KJV)
“And the four angels were loosed… for to slay the third part of men.”
This judgment kills one-third of all mankind.
A Massive Army
Revelation 9:16 (KJV)
“And the number of the army of the horsemen were two hundred thousand thousand: and I heard the number of them.”
A 200 million-member army appears—John does not guess the number; he hears it directly.
Description of the Army and Horses
Revelation 9:17–19 (KJV)
“And thus I saw the horses in the vision…
and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone…
By these three was the third part of men killed…”
The horses themselves issue deadly plagues:
- Fire
- Smoke
- Brimstone
This is not symbolic. The effects are literal:
- One-third of humanity dies.
- Fire, smoke, and brimstone kill millions.
- Their tails are like serpents with heads that injure.
Humanity Still Refuses to Repent
Revelation 9:20–21 (KJV)
“And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not…
Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.”
Despite overwhelming judgment, humanity refuses repentance.
THE SEVENTH TRUMPET: THE KINGDOM DECLARED AND THE FINAL WRATH PREPARED
(Third Woe)
WAR IN HEAVEN AND SATAN CAST DOWN
(The Final Trumpet Consequence)
While the Seventh Trumpet announces Christ’s coming reign, Scripture also reveals that this Third Woe includes a final, decisive war in heaven, resulting in Satan losing his remaining authority and being cast down permanently to the earth.
This event explains why the final period of Tribulation becomes so intense upon humanity.
War in Heaven: Michael and God’s Angels Fight Satan
Revelation 12:7–9 (KJV)
“And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,
And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.
And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.”
This is not symbolic language. Scripture plainly states:
• There is literal war in heaven
• Michael and God’s angels fight
• Satan and his fallen angels fight back
• Satan loses permanently
• Heaven is no longer accessible to him
• Satan and his fallen angels are cast out permanently from the heavenly realm
This is the final expulsion of Satan from the heavenly realm.
Satan Stripped of His Princely Power
Before this event, Satan is described as holding limited authority:
Ephesians 2:2 (KJV)
“Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience.”
During the Third Woe, that authority is revoked.
Revelation 12:10 (KJV)
“And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.”
Satan is no longer:
• An accuser before God
• A ruler in the heavenly realm
• A prince over the air
His legal access is stripped, his position removed, and his power restricted to the earth only—and even that is temporary.
Satan Cast Down Among Men — The Reason the Third Woe Is So Severe
Revelation 12:12 (KJV)
“Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.”
This verse explicitly connects:
• Satan’s casting down
• His rage
• His short remaining time
• The WOE upon the earth
This explains why the Third Woe is so devastating:
• Satan knows judgment is inevitable
• He has lost all heavenly authority
• He unleashes fury on mankind
• He intensifies deception, persecution, and destruction
Satan Targets Humanity and Israel
Revelation 12:13 (KJV)
“And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child.”
Satan’s wrath becomes focused and desperate, driving the final conflicts of the Tribulation period.
Satan’s Defeat Is Certain
Even during this final rage, Scripture assures victory:
Revelation 12:11 (KJV)
“And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.”
Satan’s fall during the Third Woe guarantees:
• Christ’s authority is absolute
• Satan’s time is nearly finished
• The Kingdom proclamation of the Seventh Trumpet is irreversible
The Third Woe in Summary
The Third Woe includes:
• The Seventh Trumpet announcement
• War in Heaven
• Satan stripped of princely authority
• Permanent expulsion from heaven
• Casting down among men
• Unleashing of final wrath
• Preparation for the Seven Vials
• The inevitable reign of Christ
This final woe confirms that the spiritual war is ending, Satan’s rule is collapsing, and Jesus Christ is about to take full possession of the kingdoms of this world.
The seventh trumpet does not release immediate destruction like the first six. Instead, it proclaims the coming of the final series of judgments, the Seven Vials.
Revelation 11:15 (KJV)
“And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying,
The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.”
What Scripture States Clearly
- The seventh trumpet announces the transition of world rule to Christ.
- Heaven rejoices and worships.
- God prepares to pour out the final, rapid-fire judgments of His wrath.
God’s Temple in Heaven Opens
Revelation 11:19 (KJV)
“And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament…”
This marks:
- Access to God’s holiness
- The unleashing of the final judgments
The seventh trumpet leads directly into the Seven Vials of Revelation 16.
WHAT THE TRUMPETS REVEAL ABOUT GOD
God Is Holy and Just
The Trumpet Judgments demonstrate that sin has consequences and rebellion cannot continue forever. God’s holiness requires justice.
God Warns Before He Judges
Trumpets are warning instruments. Before the final wrath, God gives the world multiple chances to repent.
God Answers the Prayers of His Saints
The judgments begin after the prayers of the saints are offered before God. He hears and acts.
God Is Still Merciful During Judgment
Humanity is given opportunities to repent—yet Scripture says many refuse.
Jesus Christ Will Reign as King
The seventh trumpet announces that Christ will rule forever, fulfilling all prophecy.
If the Holy Spirit is pulling at your heart strings today, give in to Him and follow the prayer below for your salvation in Jesus Christ!
Come! He’s Waiting on You!
Prayer to Salvation
Heavenly Father,
I come before You today admitting that I am a sinner in need of Your mercy and grace. Your Word says in Romans 10:9–10 that if I confess with my mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in my heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, I shall be saved. Today, I confess Jesus Christ as my Lord and my Savior. I believe with all my heart that He died for my sins, was buried, and rose again the third day.
Lord Jesus, I ask You to forgive me of all my sins. Wash me clean in Your precious blood. I turn from my old life and surrender fully to You. Come into my heart, make me a new creature, and fill me with the Holy Spirit. From this day forward, I choose to follow You, live by Your Word, and walk in the new life You have given me.
Thank You, Lord, for saving me, for forgiving me, and for writing my name in the Lamb’s Book of Life. I give You all the glory, honor, and praise.
In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
