The Throne Room of God — A Glimpse Into Heaven Before the Judgments Begin(Revelation 4–5, KJV)

By Junior Tate Ministries

Before the seals are opened… before the trumpets sound… before the vials of wrath are poured out upon the earth… God gives John (and us) a breathtaking look into Heaven’s Throne Room.

Revelation 4–5 is the heavenly scene that sets the stage for all the judgments that follow. It shows us:

  • The throne and the One who sits upon it
  • The elders and their worship
  • The living creatures (angels) around the throne
  • The sealed book (scroll) in God’s hand
  • The worthiness of the Lamb to open the seals

This is not fantasy. It is real worship in Heaven. And God lets us see it before the judgments begin, so we understand that everything that happens in Revelation 6–19 flows from God’s throne and the authority of the Lamb.

The Open Door in Heaven and the Centrality of the Throne

Revelation 4:1–2 (KJV)

1 After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter.
2 And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne.

John is taken up in the Spirit and sees “a throne… and one sat on the throne.” The very first thing Heaven wants us to see is not the judgments, not even the saints—but the throne and the One who sits upon it.

  • The door opened in heaven shows that this is a real place, not just a symbol.
  • The voice like a trumpet connects back to Revelation 1:10–11 and shows the same Lord Jesus calling John higher.
  • The phrase “things which must be hereafter” marks a prophetic shift—future events that follow the Church Age, after the Rapture of the Church.
  • Christ opens the door as He is the door, calling His Church Home!

Before we see seals, trumpets, or vials, God anchors our hearts in this truth:
All future events unfold under the rule of the One on the throne.

The Glory of the One Who Sits on the Throne

Revelation 4:3 (KJV)- And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.

John does not give us a physical description of God’s face or form. Instead, he describes glory, color, and light:

  • Jasper – Often understood as a clear, diamond-like stone: purity, brilliance, and glory.
  • Sardine (sardius) – A fiery red stone: speaks of blazing holiness and justice.
  • Rainbow round about the throne… like unto an emerald – A complete circle of covenant mercy, green in hue, reminding us of God’s faithfulness (Genesis 9).

God’s throne is not cold and dark. It shines with holiness, righteousness, and covenant mercy. Judgment is coming, but it flows from a God who is both holy and faithful, full of glory and grace.

The Twenty-Four Elders: Worshipping Representatives Around the Throne

Revelation 4:4 (KJV)- And round about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold.

Scripture tells us several clear things about these elders:

  • They are twenty-four in number.
  • They sit on seats (thrones) around God’s throne.
  • They are clothed in white raiment – a picture of purity and victory, often associated with the righteousness of the saints (Revelation 19:8).
  • They wear crowns of gold – rewards of authority and honor.

Scripture does not give their names, but based on what is written, we can see:

  • They are redeemed, not angels, because later their song speaks of being redeemed and made kings and priests (Revelation 5:9–10).
  • They are enthroned and crowned, showing they share in rule under God’s authority.
  • Christ has given them their eternal rewards as he promised, when He returns for His Church.

What matters most is not speculation about who they are, but what they do:
They worship, they cast their crowns, and they give glory to God.

Revelation 4:10–11 (KJV)

10 The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying,
11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

Their crowns represent rewards for faithfulness. Yet in Heaven, they cast them back at the feet of the One who truly deserves all glory.

  • They acknowledge God as Creator: “for thou hast created all things.”
  • They acknowledge God’s purpose: “for thy pleasure they are and were created.”

Every reward, every victory, every honor we receive from God ultimately belongs back to Him.

The Atmosphere of the Throne: Lightning, Thunder, and the Spirit of God

Revelation 4:5 (KJV)- And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.

We see:

  • Lightnings, thunderings, and voices – These often accompany God’s presence in Scripture (Exodus 19:16–18). They show awe, power, and the seriousness of His presence.
  • Seven lamps of fire… which are the seven Spirits of God – This points to the fullness and perfection of the Holy Spirit (compare Isaiah 11:2).

Before any judgment begins on earth, the scene in Heaven shows that God’s power and Spirit are active and present. Judgment is not random; it is the action of a holy God who sees, hears, and speaks.

The Sea of Glass and the Four Living Creatures (Angelic Beings)

Revelation 4:6–8 (KJV)

6 And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind.
7 And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle.
8 And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.

Important truths from this passage:

The Sea of Glass

  • “A sea of glass like unto crystal” stands before the throne.
  • It pictures peace, holiness, and separation; like a clear floor of crystal between the Creator and creation.
  • No waves, no turmoil; God’s throne is a place of perfect stability and holiness.

The Four Living Creatures

They are called “beasts” in KJV, but the idea is living creatures, similar to the cherubim and seraphim seen in Ezekiel 1 and Isaiah 6:

  • They are full of eyes – God’s creation sees all; nothing is hidden from Heaven’s view.
  • They have six wings – links to Isaiah’s vision of seraphim (Isaiah 6:2).
  • Each has a distinct form:
    • Like a lion – strength, king of wild animals.
    • Like a calf – service, sacrifice, strength in labor.
    • Face as a man – intelligence, relationship.
    • Like a flying eagle – swiftness, majesty, and heavenly vision.

Whatever else these forms signify, Scripture clearly shows these beings are heavenly, holy servants of God, constantly engaged in worship.

Their Unceasing Worship

“And they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.”

Notice:

  • “Holy, holy, holy” – The only attribute of God emphasized in triple form.
  • “Lord God Almighty” – He is all-powerful.
  • “Which was, and is, and is to come” – God is eternal and unchanging.

Before any judgment is poured out, Heaven emphasizes God’s holiness, power, and eternal nature.

The Worship in Heaven — Creator Worthy of All Praise

Revelation 4:9–11 (KJV)

9 And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever,
10 The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying,
11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

The pattern is clear:

  1. The living creatures give glory, honor, and thanks.
  2. The elders respond by falling down and casting their crowns.
  3. The song of Heaven proclaims the worthiness of God as Creator.

This is worship centered on:

  • Who God is – “him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever.”
  • What God has done – “for thou hast created all things.”
  • Why we exist – “for thy pleasure they are and were created.”

Before we see the Lamb and redemption in chapter 5, we see the Creator and creation in chapter  Heaven declares: God is worthy simply because He is God and Creator.

The Sealed Book in the Right Hand of God

Now the focus shifts from the throne and worship to a book (scroll) in God’s hand.

Revelation 5:1 (KJV)- And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals.

Key details:

  • It is in the right hand of Him that sits on the throne — the hand of power and authority.
  • It is a book (scroll) written within and on the backside — fully written, nothing to add.
  • It is sealed with seven seals — perfectly and completely sealed, not opened by just anyone.

Scripture does not label the book with a simple title, but based on what happens when the seals are opened in Revelation 6–8, we can say at least this:

  • The scroll contains God’s decreed judgments and His plan to bring history to its rightful conclusion.
  • Opening the seals releases the events of the Tribulation, leading to Christ’s visible reign (Revelation 19–20).

The main point in the text is not speculation about what exactly is written on the scroll, but who is worthy to open it.

The Search for One Who Is Worthy

Revelation 5:2–4 (KJV)

2 And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?
3 And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon.
4 And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon.

A strong angel cries out with a loud voice:

“Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?”

Notice the emphasis is not on strength, wisdom, or position—but on worthiness.

  • No man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth is able.
  • Not a single human being, dead or alive, in any realm, qualifies.
  • John weeps much – deep sorrow, because God’s plan seems unable to move forward if no one can open the scroll.

This shows:

  • All of heaven and earth are unworthy in themselves to execute God’s final plan.
  • History’s climax is not in the hands of kings, rulers, or heroes—but in the hands of One worthy Person.

The Worthiness of the Lamb — The Lion, Root, and Redeemer

Revelation 5:5 (KJV)- And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.

One of the elders gives John a message of hope:

  • “Weep not” – There is no need to despair.
  • “Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda” – This is a title rooted in Genesis 49:9–10, pointing to the royal Messiah from Judah.
  • “The Root of David” – He is both the origin and offspring of David (compare Revelation 22:16).
  • He “hath prevailed” – He has conquered, overcome, and is therefore qualified to open the book and loose the seals.

John hears about a Lion, but what he sees next is deeply significant.

Revelation 5:6–7 (KJV)

6 And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.
7 And he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne.

He sees:

  • A Lamb as it had been slain – The marks of sacrifice are still visible. The Lion conquers as the Lamb who was slain.
  • The Lamb stands in the midst of the throne, the living creatures, and the elders — the center of Heaven’s attention.
  • Seven horns – Horns often symbolize power; seven shows complete power.
  • Seven eyes… the seven Spirits of God – speaks of perfect spiritual insight, the fullness of the Spirit active through Him.
  • The Lamb comes and takes the book out of the right hand of Him that sat on the throne.

No one stops Him. No one questions Him. The Father does not resist.
This act shows absolute approval and shared authority between the Father and the Son.

The New Song — Why the Lamb Is Worthy

As soon as the Lamb takes the book, worship explodes on a new level.

Revelation 5:8–10 (KJV)

8 And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints.
9 And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;
10 And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.

Notice carefully why the Lamb is declared worthy:

  1. “For thou wast slain” – His worthiness is rooted in His sacrificial death.
  2. “And hast redeemed us to God by thy blood” – Salvation is by the blood of Christ, not by works.
  3. “Out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation” – Redemption is global, not limited to one ethnicity.
  4. “And hast made us unto our God kings and priests” – He restores us to royal and priestly service.
  5. “And we shall reign on the earth” – There is a real future reign with Christ.

This is a new song because:

  • It is the song of redeemed people.
  • It celebrates not only creation (chapter 4), but redemption and reigning (chapter 5).
  • There will be no need to sing the old songs about Christ returning for His Church, for the Church will already be in Heaven. Instead, we will lift up new songs—songs born out of our redemption and the glory of the Lamb who purchased us with His own blood.

The elders and living creatures now fall before the Lamb as they did before the One on the throne. The Lamb is worshipped with the same kind of honor given to God, showing His full deity.

The Angels Join the Chorus — Myriads Upon Myriads

Revelation 5:11–12 (KJV)

11 And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands;
12 Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.

The circle widens:

  • First, the four living creatures.
  • Then, the twenty-four elders.
  • Now, countless angels join in.

Their united declaration:

“Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive:
– Power
– Riches
– Wisdom
– Strength
– Honour
– Glory
– Blessing”

Seven things—again showing perfection and fullness. The Lamb deserves all of it.

Note: The angels do not speak of being redeemed by His blood as the elders do. They magnify His worthiness from the standpoint of His greatness and His sacrificial work, even though they themselves are not redeemed sinners.

All Creation Joins in Worship

Revelation 5:13–14 (KJV)

13 And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.
14 And the four beasts said, Amen. And the four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever.

Now the worship reaches its widest possible scope:

  • Every creature in every realm joins in.
  • The praise is directed “unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb” — both together.
  • The worship is eternal: “for ever and ever.”

Heaven’s response:

  • The four living creatures say, “Amen.”
  • The elders fall down and worship yet again.

This is the climax of the throne room scene. Before a single seal is opened, God wants us to see:

  • The absolute sovereignty of the One on the throne.
  • The finished redeeming work and worthiness of the Lamb.
  • The worship of Heaven centered on God and the Lamb.

Only after this do the judgments begin in chapter 6.

What This Throne Room Vision Means for Believers Today

From Revelation 4–5, several clear, scripture-based truths stand out for us:

  1. God is absolutely in control.
    • The throne is set in Heaven. It does not shake. It is not threatened by earthly powers.
    • Whatever happens on earth in the future, God’s throne stands firm.
  2. God is holy, eternal, and worthy of all worship.
    • “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come” (Revelation 4:8).
    • He created all things, and they exist for His pleasure (Revelation 4:11).
  3. The Lamb is the center of Heaven.
    • He is both Lion of Judah and Lamb slain.
    • He stands in the midst of the throne, the living creatures, and the elders. Everything in Heaven revolves around Him.
  4. The Lamb alone is worthy to unfold God’s final plan.
    • No man, no angel, no power is worthy—only Christ, who was slain and redeemed us by His blood (Revelation 5:9).
  5. Redemption is by the blood of the Lamb.
    • “Thou… hast redeemed us to God by thy blood” (Revelation 5:9).
    • If a person is not redeemed by His blood, they are not part of this redeemed song.
  6. Our future includes reigning with Christ.
    • “And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth” (Revelation 5:10).
    • The judgments that follow are not the end; they lead to Christ’s open reign and the fulfillment of God’s promises.
  7. Our crowns belong at His feet.
    • Any reward we receive comes from His grace, and in Heaven we see the elders casting their crowns before Him (Revelation 4:10).
    • Faithful Christians will gladly lay everything at the feet of the One who saved them.

A Glimpse Before the Storm

Revelation 4–5 is like standing on a high mountain and looking into the control room of the universe before the storm of judgment breaks upon the earth.

  • The worship,
  • The elders,
  • The angels,
  • The sealed book,
  • The worthiness of the Lamb

All show us that what is about to happen in the rest of Revelation is not chaos, but the ordered, righteous outworking of God’s plan through the Lamb.

For the believer, this vision should:

  • Strengthen our confidence in God’s sovereign control.
  • Deepen our worship, knowing how Heaven worships right now.
  • Increase our love for Christ, who is both Lamb slain and Lion who prevails.
  • Stir our hearts to live for His glory, knowing one day our crowns, our praise, and our lives will be laid at His feet.

If you are saved, this scene is part of your future reality.
If you are not yet redeemed by the blood of the Lamb, Revelation 5:9 shows the only way to God:

“…thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood…”

There is one throne, one God, and one worthy Lamb.
He is worthy of all your trust, all your worship, and all your life—before the judgments begin and forever throughout eternity.

If the Holy Spirit is convicting and pulling at your heart strings today, give in to Him and follow the prayer below for your salvation in Jesus Christ! You may not ever get another chance to except Christ as your personal Savior and Lord! Your next breath is not promised!

Come! He’s Waiting on You!

Prayer to Salvation

Heavenly Father,
I come before You today admitting that I am a sinner in need of Your mercy and grace. Your Word says in Romans 10:9–10 that if I confess with my mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in my heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, I shall be saved. Today, I confess Jesus Christ as my Lord and my Savior. I believe with all my heart that He died for my sins, was buried, and rose again the third day.

Lord Jesus, I ask You to forgive me of all my sins. Wash me clean in Your precious blood. I turn from my old life and surrender fully to You. Come into my heart, make me a new creature, and fill me with the Holy Spirit. From this day forward, I choose to follow You, live by Your Word, and walk in the new life You have given me.

Thank You, Lord, for saving me, for forgiving me, and for writing my name in the Lamb’s Book of Life. I give You all the glory, honor, and praise.
In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
